Afro Hair Transplant in Turkey

Understanding Afro Hair Transplant

Why afro hair needs a specialist approach

Afro-textured hair curves beneath the skin as well as above it. A standard straight punch can cut across the follicle and damage the graft, so extraction has to follow the curl of each root, using an adapted punch and angle.

Cutting across a follicle is called transection. In a study of 18 patients with tightly curled hair, sharp and dull rotary punches failed outright or over-transected in 8 of the 18, with individual rates above 80% and one near 90%. A curved non-rotary punch stayed under 5% in every case, and under 10% in the harder donor areas of patients who also had acne keloidalis nuchae, a scarring scalp condition. A later series using one commercial device reported mean rates of about 3 to 6%, nearer 6% for coily hair, with individual maximums up to 15%. Both studies were run by the surgeon who developed and patents those punches, and neither used an independent assessor, so treat the figures as a reason to ask any clinic you consider what it measures, rather than as a settled benchmark.

This is why experience with afro hair specifically, rather than hair transplants in general, is the most important thing to ask any clinic about. Handled correctly, curl and calibre can actually create the appearance of more coverage per graft.

Who an afro hair transplant suits

It is suitable for men and women with afro-textured hair, a healthy donor area and hair loss that has settled. Because keloid and hypertrophic scarring are more common in some skin types, it is important to raise any personal or family history of keloids at consultation so it can be assessed first.

What your assessment should cover

These come from published studies in patients of African descent rather than from our own records, and they are reasonable things to raise with any clinic before you book.

Cause of the hair lossTraction alopecia from tight styles is common, and needs to be diagnosed and stable first. How will you confirm the cause of my hair loss before planning?
Punch shape and sizePublished afro series used 16 to 19 gauge punches shaped to follow the curve.Which punch type and gauge do you use for afro-textured hair?

Donor density and skin firmnessOften lower than in straight hair, and skin firmness affects transection more than curl. What is my measured donor density, and how many grafts does it allow?

Recovery

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, and recovery is broadly similar to other FUE cases. Small scabs and redness settle over the first week to ten days, and the transplanted hair keeps its natural curl pattern as it grows, so it blends with your existing hair.

Results and cost

Transplanted hairs usually shed early, with new growth from around three to four months and the fuller result at about twelve months. Reported graft survival commonly falls around 90 to 95%, and individual results vary.

At Dr Vivo, afro hair transplants sit within all-inclusive packaging from EUR 2,000, with the figure depending on graft count and confirmed in writing after assessment.

Afro Hair Transplant questions

Can you get a hair transplant on afro-textured hair?

Yes. Afro-textured hair can be transplanted successfully, but it needs a technique suited to its curl. The key question to ask any clinic is how much experience the team has with afro hair specifically.

Is afro hair harder to transplant?

It requires a different technique. The follicle curves below the skin surface, so extraction must follow that curve or the graft can be damaged. Experience with afro-textured hair specifically is the relevant question to ask.

Why does afro hair need a specialist technique?

Because the follicle is curved beneath the skin, a straight punch can cut across and damage it. The extraction punch and angle are adapted to follow the curl, which protects graft survival.

Is there a higher risk of keloid scarring?

Keloid and hypertrophic scarring are more common in some skin types. If you or your family have a history of keloids, raise it at consultation so it can be assessed before you commit to surgery.

Does curly hair give better coverage?

Curl and calibre can create the appearance of more coverage per graft, which is an advantage. Planning still depends on donor supply and the area to be covered.

Will the transplanted hair keep its curl?

Yes. The grafts retain the characteristics of the donor hair, including curl pattern, so results blend with your existing afro-textured hair as they grow in.

Is an afro hair transplant permanent?

The transplanted follicles usually keep growing long term because they come from donor-resistant areas. As with any case, existing hair can continue to change, so a realistic plan is part of the assessment.

How much does an afro hair transplant cost?

At Dr Vivo, it sits within all-inclusive packaging from around €2,000, with the figure depending on graft count and complexity. You receive a written quote after assessment.

How many grafts will I need?

This depends on the area and the density you want. Because curl can add visual coverage, planning is individual. A graft estimate is given at consultation after your donor area is assessed.

How long does recovery take after an afro hair transplant?

Recovery is broadly similar to other FUE cases: small scabs and redness settle over the first week to ten days, transplanted hair often sheds early, and new growth generally begins around three to four months.
